@ Mark, I think I could hear the blood boiling...a commented on Brazen commented that sometimes it's the biker who needs a "time out" for being a little worked up, which is true. The combo of frustration and snobbery can be unnecessarily dangerous for all involved.

I love bike stories and I'm in agreement with your response to Alli about drivers overall are pretty decent to bikers (un-lazy ones!). However it only takes one idiot or clueless or distracted driver to ruin your day. I would have to say the only good thing that comes out of dealing with a first class idiot is what I'll call the testosterone injection. It least for a short time it wakes me up with new vigor, more power, and speed. I have on rare occasions yelled and given the almighty finger but then I think how much I'm outmatched by speed and weight by the truck or car. I then think that perhaps I should be carrying to protect myself. It's at that point I know I've gone too far so I *try* to drop it. The thing that really gets me (OK, one of the things that really gets me) is the auto driver's education and accident prevention classes don't even mention cyclists in their program. Almost all of the auto and truck drivers don't have a clue what it's like to navigate in traffic or share the road or whatever its called. Time to sign off here - I think my testosterone level is increasing as I type this comment. Good post!

Hello Alli,

Overall, and considering I've been biking to school/work since 2001 - drivers are pretty good and patient. Sometimes though they can be so agresso - and I wonder if they're trying to kill me. Even good friends of mine who drive say they can't stand bikers around them.

Then give us our space! see - I'm demanding too.

I love bike lanes, and designated bike roads which, when well designed, are topographically friendly too. Vancouver had a good "bike route" network, and Victoria here is not so bad either.

thanks for the comment!

I bike to work everyday and still haven't figured out why there is so much animus out there, but after a recent accident, my [somewhat worried] boyfriend gave me this sound advice, "Just assume that everyone is trying to kill you."

Economist recently had an article about this and the commenters didn't get why bikers won't ride closer to parked cars, allowing cars to pass. They've clearly never biked next to parked cars. All it takes is one absent-minded person opening a door. It is on my mind throughout my entire ride. Which is why I position myself right in the middle of the car lane--unless, of course, a bike lane is available.
