Letter to Larch
Posted by torbjornrive on April 6, 2008
Hello! Several weeks ago I decided that you are my favourite tree. This comes as a surprise because I’m not sure I’ve ever had a favourite, but you sure are racking up the points here, Larch. First off, I like how you’re an alien species that can really adjust to our climate here. I mean, super-neato! You’re Japanese, Russian, Eastern, Western. Here on the west coast islands, you show up in ALL these forms, especially the Eastern for some reason. Which maybe is why I like you so much. I dunno…
How does it feel to know that you’re used for heavy construction and railroad ties?! Pretty industrial if you ask me! Furthermore, one can make turpentine from your sap?! Cooooooool.
Anyhoo. Enjoy this little haiku I wrote you when I was bored,
Lates!

Don’t know much about the larch. Is it one of those rare non-native species that is not harmful or invasive?

Well I guess depending on where you are it’s native, or non-native. I think it is more common in Europe, but I’m not quite sure. We have our Western Larch out here, but then we also get the, yep, rare-er Eastern too.
I don’t think it is harmful, no (as in it doesn’t release a toxin to kill others). Or invasive, depending on how you look at it. From an urban ecology view I think it’s nothing but great.

If you are in coastal BC, the arbutus is truly the finest tree available. This is not a subjective opinion, but an objective truth. The arbutus is truly one of the world’s great trees.

Reid – my next letter was going to be a letter to the Arbutus tree then the Pine – each to apologize for their near plight due to disease, beetle or virus.
